Auditions


The auditions for the 2010-2011 concert season will be on Saturday, May 8 and Saturday, May 15 at Oklahoma City University. The schedule is as follows:

May 8 – Violin (9:00 am to 5:00 pm); Bass (9:00 am to Noon); Flute (9:00 am to 1:00 pm); B flat Clarinet (9:00 am to 1:00 pm); Percussion (10:00 am to Noon)

May 15 – Violin (9:00 am to 5:00 pm); Viola (9:00 am to 5:00 pm); Cello (9:00 am to 5:00 pm); Woodwinds (except flute and B flat clarinet, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm); Brass (9:00 am to 5:00 pm)

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR OKLAHOMA YOUTH ORCHESTRAS

 

 

The following are the audition requirements for the orchestra program.  All students must audition each year for placement; current ensemble placement does not guarantee placement in that ensemble or higher the following year.

 

The required solo piece does not need to be memorized, and no copies need to be brought for the judges.  The piece is unaccompanied.

 

 

STRING AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

 

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE OKLAHOMA YOUTH ORCHESTRA, students should perform the following:

 

Excerpt(s) from solo and/or etude repertoire that reflects both technical and lyrical performance.  String students should be playing repertoire from music that is at least on the level of Suzuki Book V and demonstrates shifting into third position and higher.          

 

Scale for Violin, Viola, Cello:  Three-octave scale of the student’s choice; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately).  One scale tone per bow. Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged.

 

Scale for String Bass: Two octave scale; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately). One scale tone per bow. Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged.

 

 

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE OKLAHOMA YOUTH PHILHARMONIA, students should perform the following:

 

Excerpt(s) from solo and/or etude repertoire that reflects both technical and lyrical performance.  String students should be playing repertoire from music that is at least on the level of Suzuki Book IV and demonstrates shifting into third position.             

 

Scale for Violin, Viola, Cello:  Three-octave scale of the student’s choice is preferred for best consideration, or a two-octave major scale that demonstrates shifting above third position; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately).  One scale tone per bow. Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged.

 

Scale for String Bass: Two octave scale; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately). One scale tone per bow. Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged

 

 

 

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE HARRISON CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, students should perform the following:

 

Excerpt(s) from solo and/or etude repertoire that reflects both technical and lyrical performance.  String students should be playing repertoire from music that is at least on the level of Suzuki Book III or IV and demonstrates shifting into third position.  Students should demonstrate shifting and vibrato techniques.   

 

Scale for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass: Two octave scale (which shifts) of the students choice; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately).  One scale tone per bow.  Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged.   

 

 

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE HARRISON SINFONIA, students should perform the following:

 

Excerpt(s) from solo and/or etude repertoire that reflects both technical and lyrical performance.  String students should be playing repertoire from music that is at least on the level of Suzuki Book II, III, or IV and demonstrates shifting into third position.  Students should be learning and improving shifting and vibrato techniques.   

 

Scale for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass: Two octave scale (which shifts) of the students choice; quarter note = 84 mm (approximately).  One scale tone per bow.  Use of vibrato is strongly encouraged.   

 

 

WIND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Excerpt(s) from solo and/or etude repertoire that reflects both technical and lyrical performance.

 

Two octave major scale of the students choice; Quarter note = 84 mm (approximately)

               

                                 

PERCUSSION AUDITION REQUIREMENTS            

 

All percussion audition candidates must pick a solo of your choice on EITHER a mallet or keyboard instrument, snare drum or timpani. In addition, each person is required to perform on all of the following:

         

Snare drum: Rudimental Rolls, flams, paradiddles

Mallet Instruments: Two octave major scale and Arpeggio of the student’s choice

Timpani:  Long roll ppp to fff and interval tuning to P 4th’s and P 5th’s
